Project history: Otsu-Gata B2 type. Built under the 1941 War programme. Practically repeated Otsu-Gata B1, differing by some smaller engine power. 8 more submarines were supposed to built under the 1942 programme (Nos 702-709), but works have not been begun.

Modernizations: early 1945, I44: - 1 x 1 - 140/40, catapult with hangar and seaplane; + 4 Kaiten human torpedoes.

3.1945, I44: + 2 Kaiten human torpedoes

Naval service: I40 was lost in December, 1943 in Gilbert's Islands area. I43 15.2.1944 was sunk SE off Guam by US submarine Aspro. I42 was sunk 23.3.1944 off Palau by US submarine Tunny. I45 after 27.10.1944 was lost, possibly, she was sunk 28.10.1944 NE off Surigao Strait by US escort destroyer Whitehurst. I41 was sunk 18.11.1944 E off Samar by US escort destroyer Lawrence Ñ. Taylor and carrier aircraft. I44 was damaged 26.5.1944 at Truk by US submarine Permit, after 4.4.1945 she was lost, possibly sunk 29.4.1945 in Philippine Sea by US carrier aircraft (under other data, sunk 10.4.1945 S from Okinawa by US escort destroyer Fieberling).
