Project history: Kai-Ko-Taka Am (Ko-gata modified) type. Built under the 1941 War programme. Originally I13-15 should be laid down under design Ko-Gata A1, but later were re-ordered (together with the fourth submarine I1) under the advanced design on the basis of Ko-Gata A2: it was supposed to equip them not with one, but two seaplanes, and not reconnaissance, as on all previous classes, but attack Aichi M6A Seiran (it was planed to operate against Panama canal by these seaplanes). For placing of these much larger planes it was necessary to redesign full complex "CT-hangar" completely. A new cylindrical hangar with light radome was slightly shifted to starboard side, and CT to port, that has given to submarines of this class enough original appearance. Fwd from "CT-hangar" complex powerful pneumatic catapult was installed. There were two cranes at each side to handling aircrafts. Cost of increasing of aviation armament was still more, in comparison with original design, decrease of engine power. Double-hulled. Endurance was about 90 days.
Building of I1 and I15 was suspended in March, 1945 at 70% and 90% availability respectively. Under the additional 1942 programme building of 4 further submarines of this class was provided (Nos 5094-5096), but works did not start.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: I13 was sunk 16.7.1945 E off Yokosuka by US escort destroyer Lawrence Ñ. Taylor and carrier aircraft (Anzio air group).
