Project history: Design was developed on the basis of trawler. Ships were built under 1940 (first 6) and 1941 (remaining) programmes. Orders were placed on small yards which had experience of wood fishing vessels building.
Modernizations: 1944, most survived: - 1 x 1 - 7.7/80; + (2 - 4) x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, DC stowage was increased to 15.
Naval service: 6 ships were lost during war: Wa1 and Wa2 (sunk by US carrier aircraft 4.5.1942 at Solomons), Wa4 (sunk 19.7.1944 by British aircraft at Timor), Wa8 (sunk 21.10.1944 by US carrier aircraft off Panay), Wa10 (sunk 11.1.1945 by US destroyers S off Luzon) and Wa3 ( sunk 24.7.1945 by US aircraft in Surabaya harbour).
Wa5 was damaged 18.9.1944 by US aircraft at Carolines and never repaired. Wa6 was badly damaged 10.8.1945 by US aircraft, ran aground in Yamada Bay, later she was raised and repaired for mercantile service.
