Project history: Built under 3rd Supplementary programme of 1937. Development of W17 class with strengthened artillery.

Modernizations: 1943 - 1944, all survived: - 1 x 1 - 120/45, minesweeping gear; + 2 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 3 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, 2 DCT (36), 2-shiki 2-go or 3-shiki 1-go radar, 93-shiki hydrophone

Naval service: W10 was sunk 10.12.1941 at Luzon by US aircraft. W9 was lost 2.2.1943 at Amboina (Ceram) on Dutch mine. W7 was sunk 15.4.1944 in Andaman Sea by British submarine Storm. W11 was damaged 2.2.1943 on a mine at Amboina, 28.3.1945 at Celebes she was sunk by US aircraft. W12 was damaged 2.2.1943 on a mine at Amboina, 6.4.1945 she was sunk at Sumbawa (Java Sea) by US submarine Besugo. W8 was scuttled by British at Singapore 13.7.1946.
