Project history: Development of W7 class with minor alterations. Their building was provided by 4th (6 ships) and 5th (28 ships) Supplementary programmes of 1939 and 1941. Actually only 23 ships were been begun and only 17 entered service. Orders for the remaining have been cancelled. The 1942 programme provided building of 46 more ships, but works did not begun.

Modernizations: 1944, 20-25-go: - 1 x 1 - 120/45; + 2 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 3 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, 2 DCT (36)

Naval service: W26 2.11.1943 was hard damaged at Rabaul by US aircraft and sunk here by US aircraft 17.2.1944 during damage repair. W25 was sunk 4.7.1944 at coast of Japan by US carrier aircraft. W39 was sunk 20.7.1944 at coast of Japan by US submarine Threadfin. W28 2.10.1943 was damaged on a mine, 29.8.1944 she was sunk at Celebes by US submarine Jack. W22 was damaged 27.2.1943 by US submarine Grampus, 11.11.1944 she was lost on a mine at Balikpapan. W30 was sunk 11.11.1944 in Omrock Bay (Philippines) by US carrier aircraft. W38 was sunk 20.11.1944 SW off Formosa by US submarine Atule. W41 was hard damaged 4.1.1945 at Takao (Formosa) by US aircraft, has sunk on shallow water and later scrapped. W20 was sunk 4.5.1945 at coast of Japan by US submarine Trepang. W29 was damaged 5.2.1945 on a mine, 7.5.1945 she was lost at coast of Japan on a mine. W34 was sunk 21.5.1945 in Java Sea by US submarine Chub. W27 was sunk 10.7.1945 at coast of Japan by US submarine Runner. W24 was sunk 15.7.1945 at coast of Japan by US carrier aircraft. W33 was sunk 9.8.1945 at coast of Japan by British carrier aircraft.

W19 was hard damaged 10.12.1941 by US aircraft at N coast of Luzon, was not under repair and laid up 15.1.1942, BU 1946. W21 was damaged 10.4.1945 on a mine.

W23 in October, 1947 was on a reparation transferred to the USSR.
