Project history: Simplified version of Ajiro class, built under the 1943-44 programme, curvilinear surfaces whenever possible have been changed by the flat for building acceleration. Besides, machinery power was increased almost twice. In total it was supposed to built 20 ships, but orders on 7 (Nos 1803-1809) were cancelled and 13 ships of 1944/45 programme were never ordered.

Modernizations: None

Naval service: In 1947 Kamishima on reparation was transferred to the USSR. Awashima was completed after war in disarmed condition.
