Project history: Official "standard" displacement appears to be several thousand tons below the actual figure. Although given an LST-type designation, the design is in reality a dock landing ship configured to accept two U.S. LCAC class air-cushion vehicle landing craft in a 70m-long docking well; there is no bow door, and the ship is not intended to beach. Although the upper deck is a relatively unobstructed 130x23m, only the after portion is used as a helicopter landing position (for two CH-47 Chinook-size aircraft). The remainder of the deck is used for vehicle cargo stowage. There are two vehicle elevators rising to the flight deck, one forward on the centerline and one to starboard abaft the island superstructure, but neither is large enough to accommodate a helicopter. The elevators serve a 50x15m vehicle cargo deck, which also has side ramps port and starboard; abreast the side ramps on the centerline is a vehicle turntable. In an emergency, can accommodate up to 1000 passengers. The superstructure is shaped to reduce radar reflection, and its width, in combination with the breadth of the island structure, precludes using the flight deck for fixed-wing aircraft operations. A previously planned 76-mm gun will not be installed.
