Project history: Built under 5th Supplementary programme of 1941, presented improved variant of Etorofu class ships. Unlike A type, armed with 120mm guns removed from old destroyers, Mikura class ships received dual-purpose guns of the same calibre in single and twin mounts. Also ASW armament have been strengthened.
Modernizations: late 1944, all survived: - 2 x 2 - 25/60; + 3 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 1 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki, 3-shiki 1-go radar
early 1945, all survived: - minesweeping gear; + 4 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki
mid-1945, all survived: + 2 x 1 - 25/60 96-shiki or 2 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki
Naval service: Awaji 2.6.1944 was sunk at Formosa by US submarine Guitarro. Kusagaki 7.8.1944 off Manila was sunk by US submarine Guitarro. Chiburi 12.1.1945 was sunk at coast of Vietnam by US carrier aircraft. Mikura 10.2.1945 was damaged in Formosa Strait at collision with escort CD33, 2.5.1945 she was lost by unknown cause in Sea of Japan. Nomi 14.4.1945 was sunk at coast of Korea by US submarine Tirante. Yashiro 14.9.1944 was damaged at Formosa on a mine. Miyake 21.8.1945 was hard damaged on a ground mine, till the end of war repair was not completed.
Yashiro was in 1947 transferred to China on reparation.
