Project history: Improved version of Shimushu built under 5th Supplementary programme of 1941. Main differences from previous design became strengthened anti-submarine armament and changed stem form.
Modernizations: late 1943, Etorofu, Oki, Sado, Matsuwa, Fukue, Tsushima, Iki: - sweeps; + 1 x 1 - 81/12 ASW mortar, DC stowage was increased to 60.

Naval service: Mutsure 2.9.1943 was sunk SW off Truk by US submarine Snapper. Wakamiya 23.11.1943 was sunk at coast of China by US submarine Gudgeon. Sado 22.5.1944 was sunk W off Manila by US submarine Haddo. Iki 24.5.1944 was sunk E off Singapore by US submarine Raton. Matsuwa 24.5.1944 was damaged off Singapore by US submarine Raton, 22.8.1944 she was sunk W off Manila by US submarine Harder. Hirado 12.9.1944 was sunk in South China Sea by US submarine Growler. Amakusa 21.12.1944 was damaged on a mine, 9.8.1945 she was sunk at Onagawa by British carrier aircraft. Kandju 15.8.1945 was sunk at Wonsan (Korea) by Soviet aircraft. Etorofu 6.8.1944 was damaged by US submarine Pintado. Fukue 1.3.1945 was damaged by US carrier aircraft. Kasado 27.4.1944 was damaged by US submarine Trigger, 22.6.1945 she was damaged by US submarine Crevalle, repair was begun but 15.7.1945 ship was again hard damaged by US carrier aircraft and repair was cancelled. Mandju in the early 1945 was damaged by US submarine Pargo, 3.4.1945 she was heavy damaged at Hong Kong (being under repair) by US Army aircraft and never repaired. Oki 22.11.1944 was damaged by US submarine Scabbardfish and 19.8.1945 damaged off Pusan on a mine.
Oki and Tsushima were transferred to China on a reparation in 1947.
