"D" escorts (1944-1946)

Project history: D class escorts became the unique purpose-built IJN escorts with a steam turbine machinery. Abandoning from diesels was a compulsory measure: their production lagged behind requirements of navy, therefore half of escorts of the programme 1943/1944 received turbines. These ships concerned to D class and received even numbers, unlike diesel-driven C, having odd. Differences intermeal concerned with the ships of both types only machinery, and in remaining they were absolutely identical. As main on D class turbines were used,  similar installed on standard transports of 2А class. Two such turbines through gear unit worked on the single shaft. Steam turbine propelling plant application has allowed to raise some speed, but has led to decrease in endurance almost on third. It is interesting, that because of oil shortage these ships began to convert to coal-burning from January, 1945, and by the war end they practically did not felt oil "hunger".

Under the programme 1943/1944 143 ships (CD2-286, only even) have been ordered, but in 1944 orders on 72 (CD86-100, only even (huls Nos2743-3750), 108 (2754), 110 (2755), 114 (2757), 120 (2760), 128 (2764), 136 (2768), 140 (2770), 146 (2773), 148 (2774), 152 (2776), 162-184 (only even, 2781-2792), 188 (2794), 206-286 (only even, 2803-2843) were cancelled. In March, 1945 building of being in low availability CD70, 80 and 122 was suspended.

By the moment of capitulation there were 5 ships in completion. Works on four of them (CD58, 78, 116 and 142) have completed in 1946. Fifth (CD62) scheduled to completion in January, 1946 foundered in Kure harbour because of a leak; subsequently she was raised and handed over on demolition in 1948.

Naval service: CD24 was sunk 28.6.1944 W off Iwojima by US submarine Archerfish. CD10 was damaged 28.6.1944 by US submarine Pargo, 27.9.1944 she was sunk NE off Omamishima by US submarine Plaice. CD38 was sunk 25.11.1944 W off Manila by US submarine Hardhead. CD64 was sunk 3.12.1944 SE off Hainan (China) by US submarine Pipefish. CD28 was sunk 14.12.1944 at Luzon by US submarine Blenny. CD54 was sunk 15.12.1944 at coast of Luzon by US carrier aircraft. CD20 was sunk 30.12.1944 at Luzon by US aircraft. CD138 was sunk 2.1.1945 at Luzon by US Army aircraft. CD42 was sunk 10.1.1945 W off Okinawa by US submarine Puffer. CD144 was sunk 2.2.1945 at coast of Malaya by US submarine Besugo. CD56 was sunk 17.2.1945 in Yokohama area by US submarine Bowfin. CD66 was sunk 13.3.1945 in South China Sea by US Army aircraft. CD68 was sunk 24.3.1945 in South China Sea by US carrier aircraft. CD18 was sunk 29.3.1945 by US Army aircraft at Vietnamese coast. CD84 and CD130 were sunk 29.3.1945 at coast of Vietnam by US submarine Hammerhead. CD186 was sunk 2.4.1945 off Oshima by US carrier aircraft. CD134 was sunk 6.4.1945 in South China Sea by US Army aircraft. CD72 was sunk 1.7.1945 in Yellow sea by US submarine Haddo. CD74 was sunk 14.7.1945 off Hokkaido by US carrier aircraft. CD112 was sunk 18.7.1945 at coast of Southern Sakhalin by US submarine Barb. CD4 was heavy damaged 24 and 25.7.1945 in Toba harbour (off Yokosuka) by US carrier aircraft, 28.7.1945 she was sunk on shallow water by British carrier aircraft in Ise Bay near Yokosuka, subsequently she was raised but was not under repair and handed over on demolition in 1948. CD30 was damaged 19.9.1944 by US submarine Bang, 10.1.1945 she was damaged by US submarine Puffer and 28.7.1945 sunk in Yura Strait by US (on other sources British) carrier aircraft. CD2 was hard damaged and sunk 30.7.1945 on shallow water in Maizuru harbour by US (under other data British) carrier aircraft, subsequently she was raised, but was not under repair and in 1948 handed over on demolition. CD82 was sunk 10.8.1945 at coast of Korea by Soviet aircraft. CD6 was sunk 13.8.1945 at Erimosaki (Hokkaido) by US submarine Atule. CD46 was lost 17.8.1945 on a mine at coast of Korea. CD8 was damaged 8.10.1944 by US submarine Ное. CD132 was damaged 24.10.1944 by US submarine Besugo. CD22 was damaged 30.10.1944 by US submarine Salmon. CD124 was hard damaged 10.4.1945 on a mine, to an end of war repair was not completed. CD156 was damaged 10.4.1945 on a mine. CD40 was damaged 13.4.1945 on a mine. CD50 was hard damaged 1.5.1945 by US submarine Sennet and was not under repair. CD200 was hard damaged 17.5.1945 on a mine at Maizuru and was not under repair. CD196 was damaged 22.6.1945 by US submarine Piranha. CD154 was damaged 30.6.1945 on a mine. CD204 was hard damaged 17.7.1945 on a mine off Honshu and was not under repair. CD190 was hard damaged 24 and 28.7.1945 by US carrier aircraft, to an end of war repair was not completed. CD44 was damaged 28.7.1945 at Sasebo by US carrier aircraft and was not under repair. CD16 was damaged 13.8.1945 by US submarine Atule and never repaired. CD202 was hard damaged on a mine in August, 1945 at Sasebo and was not under repair.

In 1947 on a reparation 7 ships have been transferred to China (CD14, 40, 104, 118, 192, 194 and 198), 8 more to the USSR (CD34, 48, 52, 76, 78, 102, 142 and 196).
