Project history: The Yamagumo class carried an impressive ASW armament, and being diesel-powered, the ships have a small complement for their size and potential. They were classified as 'escort destroyers' (DDK). Originally, Yugumo was to have been the lead ship of a new class. The fact this last unit was laid down 12 years after the first reflects well upon the success of the design. They were authorised under 1962 Programme (DD113), 1963 (DD114), 1964 (DD115), 1965 (DD119), 1967 (DD120, 121). Yamagumo and Makigumo had a raised stern, which housed a VDS; the other units received the VDS during construction and, therefore, had a flat stern.

Modernizations: 1991, Yamagumo, Makigumo: received a lecture room under the ASROC launcher and a chart room added on the signal deck.

Naval service: Five ships were later transferred to Fleet Training and Development Command as Special Use Auxiliary (ASU) and training vessels (TV).
