Project history: Ordered under the 1921 Programme, these ships represented increased Momi and became last 2nd class destroyers. A little big sizes at invariable machinery power have led to decrease in max speed on 0.5kts. Destroyers had minelaying and minesweeping equipment. It was planed to build 13 ships, but order on last five cancelled in 1922. 14-go Kijiko, 22-go Nadeshiko, 24-go Botan and 26-go Basho were cancelled before they were laid down.

Modernizations: 1938, Wakatake, Sanae: solid ballast was added, standard displacement was 1131t, maximal speed was 31kts.

1940, Yugao: was converted to patrol escort. One boiler was removed, maximal speed was 18kts, engine power was 10000hp. Displacement was 930 / 1130 (normal)t; - 1 x 1 - 120/45, 2 x 1 - 7.7/80, 2 x 2 - 533 TT, mines, minesweeping gear; + 4 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 4 DCT, 2 DCR (60), 93-shiki sonar

1941 - 1942, Wakatake, Kuretake, Sanae, Fuyo, Karukaya: - 1 x 1 - 120/45, 2 x 1 - 7.7/80, mines, minesweeping gear; + 2 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 4 x 1 - 13.2/76, 4 DCT (48), 93-shiki sonar

1941 - 1942, Asagao: - 1 x 1 - 120/45, 2 x 1 - 7.7/80, 1 x 2 - 533 TT, mines, minesweeping gear; + 2 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 4 x 1 - 13.2/76, 4 DCT (48)., 93-shiki sonar

1944, some survived: + 3-shiki 1-go radar
