Project history: Urakaze and Kawakaze were ordered in United Kingdom in November, 1912. Their construction consisted many new decisions: geared steam turbines, oil-firing boilers. As part of their armament for the first time there were 533mm torpedoes and modern 120mm quick-firing guns. Besides, under design it was supposed to equip them with cruising diesels which, however, have not been made.
When both ships were on slipways, the First World War has begun, influenced on their fate.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Urakaze was formally been completed in October, 1915, but British government has forbidden to transfer her to customers. Actually destroyer arrived to Japan only in 1919. 18.7.1945 she has been sunk by American aircraft in Yokosuka. Kawakaze even before completion had been transferred to Italy.
