Project history: First destroyers, designed in Japan. First Japanese 2nd class destroyers created as alternative to powerful but very expensive Umikaze class ships. The idea has justified itself: despite modest battle characteristics Sakura became a prototype of the largest series of destroyers built in Japan in days of First World War (Kaba and Algerien classes).

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
