 Project history: Built under the 1923 Programme, improved Kamikaze class, Became last Japanese destroyers with TT installed before fore superstructure. TT became triple, and their calibre has increased to 610mm. Transition to triple mounts has allowed to shrink their number at invariable quantity of torpedoes in side salvo. Remaining armament repeated Kamikaze. Outwardly Mutsuki class ships differed from predecessors by S-shaped stem form, for long years become characteristic feature of Japanese ships. At laying down ships received not names, and according to then practice only numbers with which they were commissioned. Only in 1928 destroyers were named.

 

Modernizations: 1935 - 1936, Satsuki, Minazuki, Fumizuki, Nagatsuki, Kikuzuki, Mikazuki; 1941 - 1942, Mutsuki, Kisaragi, Yayoi, Uzuki, Mochizuki, Yuzuki: - 2 x 1 - 7.7/80; + 1 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki

1942, Satsuki, Mikazuki, Fumizuki, Nagatsuki, Kikuzuki, Uzuki: were converted to fast attack transports, displacement was 1590 / 1913t, maximal speed was 34kts; - 2 x 1 - 120/45, minesweeping gear, mines; + 2 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki, 1 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 2 DCT (36 totally), accommodation for marines and deck cargo, 93-shiki sonar

Naval service: Kisaragi 11.12.1941 was sunk at Wake by USMC aircraft. Kikuzuki 4.5.1942 was sunk in Tulagi harbour by US carrier aircraft. Mutsuki 25.8.1942 was sunk off Solomons by US carrier aircraft. Yayoi 11.9.1942 was sunk at coast of New Britain by US and Australian aircraft. Nagatsuki 6.7.1943 was sunk by USMC aircraft in Solomons area. Mikazuki 27.7.1943 ran aground at Cape Gloucester (New Britain) and destroyed next day by US Army aircraft. Mochizuki 8.11.1942 was damaged by a torpedo from US MTB, 24.10.1943 she was sunk SW off Rabaul by USMC aircraft. Fumizuki was sunk 18.2.1944 at Truck by US carrier aircraft. Minazuki 6.6.1944 was sunk in Celebes Sea by US submarine Harder. Satsuki 21.9.1944 was sunk in Manila Bay by US carrier aircraft. Yuzuki and Uzuki were sunk 12.2.1944 NE off Cebu, former by USMC aircraft, latter by US MTBs ÐT490 and ÐÒ492.
