Project history: 2nd class destroyers. In total 21 ship under Programmes of 1918 (8 ships), 1919 (5 ships) and 1920 (8 ships) were built. Represented the further development of Momo class destroyers. Design was significantly modified: instead of triple 450mm TT twin 533mm were fitted, and as on Minekaze class, No1 TT was placed fwd from the bridge. Machinery, in comparison with a prototype, was more perfect and powerful, was fitted by a gearing, that together with transition to purely oil-firing has positively affected profitability. Artillery have not undergone changes and consisted of three 120mm/45 guns in single mounts with shields. Destroyers had minesweeping equipment and demountable mine rails.

Modernizations: 1939, 31 - 39-go: were converted to patrol escorts; 1 boiler was removed, maximal speed was 18kts with engine power 12000hp, displacement increased to 935 / 1162t; - 1 x 1 - 120/45 (No 3), 2 x 1 - 7.7/80, 2 x 2 - 533 TT; + 3 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki, 4 DCT (60), 93-shiki sonar (presumably)

1940, Nire, Taki, Kaki, Ashi, Sumire: were converted to tenders (depot ships); 1 boiler was removed maximal speed was 14kts and engine power 9000hp, standard displacement was 735t; - (1 - 2) x 1 - 120/45, 1 x 2 - 533 TT. They can also used as TS.

1941, 31-go: + 1 x 2 - 25/60 96-shiki

1942 - 1943, 34 - 36-go, 38-go, 39-go: were converted to fast attack transports; DC stowage decreased to 18; + 1 14m Daihatsu landing craft, accommodation for 150 marines.

1942 - 1943, Tsuga, Kuri, Hasu: - minesweeping gear, mines; + 4 DCT (36), 93-shiki sonar (presumably)

1944-1945, most survived: + 3-shiki 1-go radar
