Project history: These units are multi-purpose destroyers with a balanced anti-air, surface and sub-surface capability. The Sea King helicopters were operated on the 'Bear Trap' system. The higher displacement of the later ships is caused by the substitution of steel superstructure for the original aluminium alloy.

Modernizations: 1990, Matsuyuki; 1994, Hatsuyuki, late 1990s, others: + OQR-1 sonar

1992, Shirayuki; 1996, Hatsuyuki: + 2 x 6 - 20/76 Mk 15 Phalanx, 2x Mk 90 radars

1990s, all: + OPS-20 radar

2000s, all: - 1 HSS-2B helicopter; + 1 SH-60 helicopter

Naval service: No significant events.
