Project history: Follow-on to the Kongo-class destroyers. DDG177 was added to the 2001-05 procurement plan in 1998 and DDG 178 in 2000 to improve strategic air defense capabilities. The design is essentially an enlargement of the Kongo class with incorporation of a helicopter hangar. VLS missile configuration is reversed from the Kongo class with the larger battery carried forward and the remaining weapons fitted aft. Fitted with the new version of Aegis weapon system (Baseline J6) with CEC 'Cooperative Engagement Capability), UPX-29(v) IFF interrogation system, ORQ-1 helicopter datalink, Mk 34 gun weapon-control system, and SQQ-121 Computer-Aided Dead-Reckoning Tracker. They are optimized for employment as theater air defense ships, using the U.S. Standard SM-2 Block III and are being upgraded with SM-3 Block 1A BMD missiles. Make considerable use of COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) computer and display equipment. The 127mm gun is carried in a faceted, radar reflection reduction gunhouse.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
