Project history: Built under the 1904 Programme, ordered during Russian-Japanese war and structurally repeated Harusame, differing by type of boilers (for the first time they had boilers with mixed coal-oil-firing) and armament consisted from single-calibre guns, but with different bore length. By the moment of end of building they have become outdated.
Modernizations: 1923, Asakaze, Wakaba, Ushio, Nenohi, Kisaragi, Kamikaze, Hatsushio, Yugure, Harukaze, Hibiki, Hatsuyuki, Yudachi; 1926, 7 - 12-go: were converted to minesweepers. They were fully rearmed with 2 x 1 - 120/40 41-shiki, 2 x 1 - 76/40 3-shiki, mechanical minesweeping gear
Naval service: Asatsuyu was lost 10.11.1913 as result of wreck off Shichi-Towan (Noto Hanto). At night 3.9.1914 Shirotae ran ashore in Kiao Chao Bay, abandoned and soon shot by German gunboat Jaguar, wreck was broken up in 1915.
