Project history: Intended as replacements for the Hatsuyuki-class destroyers. DD115 was funded in FY 07, DD116 in FY 08, 117 and 118 in FY 09. Tasked with ASW and surface screening/escort duties to protect air defense destroyers carrying out the ballistic missile defense role. The class incorporates numerous signature-reduction measures, including a modified mast design. Carries USC-42 UHF SATCOM and the OYQ-11 advanced combat direction system (ACDS).

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
