Project history: The Akizuki class were built under the US Military Aid Programme and carried the 127mm/54 guns as in the Murasames. They featured a long forecastle hull and were designed as flotilla leaders. Weapon Alfa, an ASW mortar developed in the US, proved to be unsatisfactory.

 

Modernizations: 1967, Teruzuki; 1968, Akizuki: + OQA-1 sonar

1977, Teruzuki; 1979, Akizuki: - 2 - 483 TT, 1 x 1 - 324 Mk 108 Weapon Alfa ASWRL, SQS-23 sonar; + 2 x 3 - 324 TT, 1 x 4 - 375 type 71 ASWRL, SQS-29 sonar

1985, both: - 1 x 4 - 533 TT, OQA-1 sonar

1989, Akizuki: - 1 x 1 - 127/54 (No3); + trial towed sonar array

Naval service: All ships were later transferred to Fleet Training and Development Command as Special Use Auxiliaries (ASU).
