Aircraft facilities (fd - 9,000m², ha - 2,625m² / 18,900m³): There are two aircraft elevators (20.0x13.0m fore and 15.0x14.0m aft, 30t each) and five helicopter landing spots for large helicopters and V-22 Ospreys. Also VSTOL aircraft (F-35 Lightning) can be carried. There is 125.0x21.0x7.2m hangar.

Project history: Expanded variant of the Hyuga class; designed to replace the Shirane class. First unit requested under FY10 budget, the second FY12. Two aircraft elevators and five helicopter landing spots are to be fitted; will likely have the potential to operate, UAVs as well as US-produced MV-22 and F-35B aircraft. Have additional space to transport 400 troops and the equivalent of 50 3.5t trucks to assist with disaster relief and humanitarian operations.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
