Project history: Laid down as heavy cruiser, advanced variant of Mogami class. In the summer 1943 building was suspended. In November launched hull of the ship have started to rebuild to light aircraft carrier on Sasebo N Yd.
Under design carrier had typically Japanese architecture with island on starboard and one curved aft and downwards funnel. Half of boilers demounted for release of a place for additional fuel tanks and aviation petrol tanks, max speed was thus moderated by 4kts. Hangar had one level, that resulted the limited number of carried aircrafts. Ship was equipped with bulges (approximately in half of hull length). Protection is not precisely known; possibly, it remains as on cruiser: 100mm main belt (140mm abreast magazines), decks from 35 to 61mm. It is possible to consider as features of the project the big size of a flight deck (205õ23m, longer than the hull) and absence of standard for remaining carriers 127mm or 100mm AA battery.
Ship protection: There was underwater protection (bulges). Internal main belt was inclined and had 100mm thickness abreast machinery and 140mm abreast magazines, it connected with anti-torpedo bulkhead by its lower edge. 61-35mm main deck was connected with its upper edge. Main deck thickness increased to 135mm over machinery.
Naval service: Building of Ibuki was cancelled in March, 1945, when her availability was approximately 80%. In 1947 ship was sold for scrap.
