Project history: Designed to replace the Haruna class, with first unit requested under the FY04 budget and the second under FY06. The initial design had flight deck space fore and aft, with superstructure amidships incorporating a hangar and with the stack uptakes offset to starboard, but this was modified to resemble European small aircraft carriers, with the exception of not having a ski-jump bow. Two aircraft elevators, four helicopter landing spots, and two sets of fin stabilizers are fitted. Are Link-16 compatible and carry the ORQ-1 datalink for helicopter control and communications. Outfitted with separate male and female living quarters and have additional space for 25 flag staff personnel, enabling the class to act as fleet command ships.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
