Project history: A second class cruiser laid down under the Third Fleet Law of 1903, Navy request for a sister ship was rejected. The clipper bow was the first in Japanese service.
Ship protection: 38mm deck had 76mm slopes, guns were protected by 25mm shields.
Modernizations: 1910: - 2 x 1 - 120/40
1924: + 2 x 1 - 76/40 3-shiki
Naval service: After retirement Tone was converted to a target and in April, 1933 was sunk by air bombs on manoeuvres.
