Project history: The Takao, ordered under the 1882 Programme, was the first steel-hulled warship to be laid down in Japan. The main armament of Krupp guns was sited in sponsons amidships - similar to many French cruisers of the period - with a Krupp 120mm gun at the stern.
Modernizations: 1901: new armament consisted of 4 x 1 - 152/40 Armstrong Z, 2 x 1 - 47/40 3pdr Hotchkiss Mk I, 2 - 450 TT (beam)
Naval service: Reclassified as coast defence ship in 1898.
