Project history: Russian Novik, damaged 20.8.1904 by gunfire of Japanese cruiser Tsushima off Sakhalin and 21.8.1904 sank at Korsakov by cruiser Chitose. She fell into Japanese hands 5.7.1905, salvaged 16.7.1906, repaired at Yokosuka and commissioned by IJN in December 1908. One funnel was removed, 12 Schulz-Thornycroft boilers were replaced by Miyabara. Engine power fell from 17000 to 6000hp and maximal speed from 25 to 20kts.

Ship protection: Protective deck had 38mm flat and 51mm slopes. 120mm guns were protected by 25mm shields, CT had 30mm sides.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
