Project history: The Sai Yen, ex-Chinese Chi Yuan, was captured by Japanese at Wei-Hai-Wei on 12 February 1895.

Ship protection: Protective deck consisted of two layers, upper 25mm steel and lower 50mm iron and protected almost full hull length. Barbettes of 21cm and 15cm guns had 250mm protection, their cupolas were 51mm, ammunition hoists had 76mm protection.

Modernizations: 1898: - 4 x 1 - 57/40, 9 x 5 - 37/20; + 8 x 1 - 47/40 3pdr Hotchkiss Mk I

Naval service: Sai Yen was sunk on Russian mine W of Port Arthur 30.11.1904.
