Project history: The three composite-built vessels of the Katsuragi class were ordered under the 1882 Programme and were a much more modern design than the previous Kaimon. They were completed with straight bows and recessed gunports which allowed the two forward guns to fire on a forward arc instead of only on the broadside, as in previous designs.

Modernizations: 1900, all: barque rig was removed; - 2 - 380 TT; + 8 x 1 - 47/30 21/2pdr Hotchkiss Mk I, 2 - 450 TT

1907, all: armament consisted of 4 x 1 - 76/40 Armstrong N, 4 x 1 - 47/30 21/2pdr Hotchkiss Mk I

1910s, Yamato, Musashi: - 2 x 1 - 76/40, 4 x 1 - 47/30

Naval service: Katsuragi sank 13.10.1900, raised in 1901 and repaired. Musashi ran aground near Nemoro 30.4.1902 but refloated 21.6.1902 and repaired. Yamato and Musashi were converted to survey ships in 1922, Yamato was converted to drillship in 1935 and foundered during a storm 18.9.1945 (BU in 1950), Musashi was hulked as Hai Kan No 5 in July 1928 and BU in 1931.
