Project history: Akitsushima was erected at the Yokosuka N Yd from imported materials, the design being a reduced version of the American cruiser Baltimore. Both designs were prepared by Sir William White of Armstrong's. She was not a success, proving a bad sea boat, suffering from excessive rolling, and being a poor steamer. The 152mm armament was mounted on sponsons on either beam towards the forecastle and aft towards the poop. Between the sponsoned 152mm on either broadside were two other sponsons carrying 120mm, while the remaining 120mm were sited one on the forecastle and one on the poop.

Ship protection: Protective deck had 38mm flat and 76mm slopes. Guns were protected by 114mm shields.

Modernizations: 1908: boilers were replaced by 6 Miyabara.

Naval service: Akitsushima was finally removed from the operational fleet in 1921, stricken in October 1927.
