Project history: Shikishima intended to act as escort for a ship to carry plutonium from Europe to Japan for use in nuclear electric-power generation stations, but after a single such voyage in August 1993, escorting the chartered plutonium transport Akatsuki Maru, has been used as a general patrol ship. Because of high operational demand, a second unit was funded in 2009. Are equipped with two water cannon for firefighting and harassment control.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: No significant events.
