Project history: This was a modified Aki type, designated Design A-30 by the Japanese Navy. Construction was delayed by a severe world depression. The 305mm guns were ordered in England, but the 25,000shp Brown-Curtis turbines were built under License by Kawasaki. Note that only about 20 per cent of the material was imported, compared to about 60 for Satsuma. Kawachi had a straight stern and Settsu a clipper bow. Although nominally dreadnoughts, these ships did not have a really uniform main battery, since the guns differed in length, and therefore in performance, particularly at very long range.
Ship protection: Thickness of main belt was 305mm between end barbettes decreasing to 229mm outside barbettes and to 127mm near ship ends. Its thickness decreased to 102mm at lower edge. It was closed by same bulkheads abreast end barbettes. There was 229mm upper belt between end barbettes. Casemates were protected by 152mm armor. Flat 30mm main deck was connected with upper edge of main belt. Its thickness increased to 51mm outside end barbettes and 76mm over steering gear. 12`` turrets had 280mm faces and 203mm sides. 120mm guns were protected by 25mm shields. Fore CT had 254mm sides, aft CT was protected by 152mm armor.
Modernizations: 1916 - 1917, both: - 12 x 1 - 76/40, 4 x 1 - 76/23, 2 - 450 TT; + 4 x 1 - 76/40 3-shiki AA.
Naval service: Kawachi was lost as a result of magazine explosion in Tokyo Bay (has sunk within 4 minutes, 700 crewmen were lost). Settsu was disarmed in 1922 according to decision of the Washington conference; she was officially stricken 1.10.1923. Later she was used as a radio-controlled target and sunk by aircraft of USN TF38 24.7.1945.
