Project history: Essentially small cruisers although rated as dispatch boats, these craft became obsolete with the advent of radio communitions. Because they had to be very fast, Mogami was the first turbine ship in the Japanese Navy, and also the first with three shafts. Although their particulars were similar, Yodo had a clipper bow and two funnels, whereas Mogami had a straight raked bow and three funnels. Both were delayed in construction, although officially laid down on 11 December 1905.

Ship protection: Main 63mm deck had 63mm slopes and protected machinery only.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Reclassified as gunboat in 1912. Yodo became a survey ship in 1927, and was removed from the effective list only on 1 April 1940.
