Aircraft facilities: There were 2 catapults. Seaplanes based on deck and in hangar. There were 2 lifts. 5 additional seaplanes carried as reserve. Aircraft fuel stowage was 900t.
Project history: Built under 3rd Supplementary Programme of 1937. Development of Mizuho, but design was significantly modified. Diesels power was increased more than twice, artillery was strengthened. The number of air group was moderated to 20 (plus 5 taken apart in a hangar), number of catapults was shrunk to two. Unlike previous Chitose and Mizuho classes, Nisshin could take aboard up to 700 mines
The 1942 Programme provided building of two some larger ships of this class (Nos863 and 864, with 13500t standard displacement), but works never started.
Modernizations: 1942: + 12 "A"-gata midget submarines instead of half of seaplanes
1943: - 8 x 2 - 25/60; + 6 x 3 - 25/60 96-shiki
Naval service: 28.9.1942 Nisshin was damaged by American submarine Sculpin. 2.10.1942 she was damaged at Guadalcanal by American aircraft. 22.7.1943 off Bougainville Nisshin was sunk by American aircraft.
