Project history: USN river gunboat Luzon was scuttled at Corregidor 6.5.1942, salvaged by Japanese, repaired and 1.8.1942 entered service as Karatsu.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: 3.3.1944 Karatsu was damaged by US submarine Narwhal and has sunk as result of earlier received damages at Manila 3.2.1945.
