Project history: Along with family of midgets, conducting the family tree from A type (A, B, C and D types), in the end of war the IJN has replenished with boats of the smaller size of Kairyu type. Fixed side-fins amidships were prominent feature. The designed armament consisted from two TTs, however shortage of torpedoes has led to occurrence of a variant of a boat with 600kg TNT charge instead of TTs, that actually converted them to human torpedoes. Serial building of type Kairyu boats has begun in February, 1945, for acceleration of works it was conducted by a section method (the boat shared on three sections). Plans provided to have by September, 1945 760 midgets of this type, however by August 213 boats have been completed only, and 207 more were at various stages of building.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Fates of boats are unknown.
