Project history: Taking into account experience of service of landing ship Shinshu Maru, in 1942 at initiative of Army there have been begun works on conversion of some cargo vessels being in building to amphibious transports - landing craft carriers. Among themselves they differed as ways of landing craft transportation, and their launching. Onboard of Mayasan Maru class ships Daihatsus were stored on an upper deck and launched through special cuts in the stern. On Kibitsu Maru class landing crafts were transported in a special hangar on main deck and went down on railway lines through the stern hatch-gangway port. On Takatsu Maru landing crafts were stored on an upper deck and were handled by cranes.

Naval service: Tamatsu Maru was sunk 19.8.1944 by US submarine Spadefish off Luzon. Takatsu Maru was sunk 10.11.1944 by US aircraft in Ormock Bay. Mayasan Maru was sunk 17.11.1944 by US submarine Picuda in East China Sea. Hyuga Maru was lost on a mine 30.5.1945 off Hakata. Kibitsu Maru was lost on a mine 7.8.1945 near Kobe.
