Project history: Built under the 1921-1928 programme. Design was based on construction of gunboat Saga. Besides a basic purpose, Ataka could be used as submarine salvage vessel and carried appropriate equipment.

Modernizations: (4 - 7.1937, Kure K K): foremast became tripod, bulges were fitted, breadth was 9.78 m and displacement 866 / 1094 t; - 1 x 1 - 120/45, 2 x 1 - 76/40, 2 x 1 - 7.7/80; + 2 x 1 - 76/40 11-shiki, 2 x 2 - 13.2/76, 1 DCT

1939: + 2 x 2 - 13.2/76

1940: presumably + radar

Naval service: In August, 1945 in Shanghai Ataka has surrendered to Allies and transferred to China.
