Project history: Originally built as the German minelayer submarine UC12, launched in A G Weser Yards, of Bremen, on 29 April 1915; nominally transferred to the Austrian Navy under the Austrian number U24 (but she continued to have a German crew). U24 sank on 16 March 1916 off Taranto on one of her own mines. Raised by the Italian Navy, the wreck was rebuilt under the control of Eng Cdr Curio Bernardis, renumbered X1 with the above particulars.

Naval service: No significant events.
