Project history: Built under a late-1995 cooperative agreement between Italy and Germany: program development began in Germany in 1988. First two were formally ordered during 1998. Subassembly work on the first unit commenced during 1999. Two additional units were ordered in 2008. Use a nonmagnetic Type 1.3964 austenitic steel pressure hull, 7.0 m in diameter forward, tapering via a conical section to 5.75 m abaft the control room; i.e., the boats are single-hulled forward and double-hulled aft; two accommodations decks forward. The engineering plant is suspended in a raft for sound reduction, with individual engines also using soundproof mountings. The air-independent propulsion (ATP) system employs an advanced Howaldtswerke solid-polymer, metal-hydride fuel cell system and is able to propel the submarine to a maximum speed of 8 kts exclusive of the main battery. Carry hydrazine gas generators to blow tanks for emergency surfacing. An Italian-developed ship-control system was fitted; normal maximum operating depth is greater than 300 m. The torpedo tubes use the water-ram ejection method, using two water rams. The torpedo tube arrangement is asymmetrical, with two rows of three tubes, placing four tubes to port of the centerline.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
