Project history: This class was delayed by both financial and technical problems. Sauro and Cossato originally ordered in 1967, but budget difficulties caused them to be cancelled and they were not reordered until 1972. Their completion was then delayed because their batteries did not work properly, and different batteries had to be purchased from Sweden. The first two did not commission until March 1980. These were the first Italian submarines built of HY-80 steel.
