Project history: Differed from the 1st series by only slightly increased hull length. 24 submarines were ordered, but till September, 1943 only 15 were laid down. 12 submarines of 3rd series were ordered in 1943, but no one submarine was laid down.
All 15 laid submarines 9.9.1943 have come into German hands. Seven boats being in a low degree of readiness (Alluminio, Antimonio, Fosforo, Manganese, Silicio, Zolfo and Cromo) were broken up on slipways. 8 ships of remaining has been decided to complete. Bario, Litio, Sodio, Potassio, Rame, Ferro, Piombo and Zinco were renamed UIT7-14 respectively. First three were launched, however all of them have been damaged during raid of Allied aircraft 16.3.1945 and 1.5.1945 scuttled by Germans. Remaining submarines this day were blown up on slipways. In 1945 Italians salvaged Bario and after restoring repair completed her as Pietro Calvi.
There were submarines that ordered but never laid down: Amianto, Magnesio, Mercurio (Tosi, Taranto), Cadmio, Iridio, Oro, Ottone, Rutenio, Vanadio (CRDA, Monfalcone). Other 12 submarines of III series were ordered: 6 from CRDA, 3 from Tosi and 3 from OTO. They possible names were Attinio, Azoto, Bromo, Carbonio, Elio, Molibdeno, Osmio, Ossigeno, Plutonio, Radio, Selenio and Tungsteno.
