Project history: Designed by Fiat-San Giorgio Yards, this boat had been ordered in 1913 by the German Navy and her name was to be U42, but her hull, not yet launched, was requisitioned by the Italian Navy in June 1915. Renamed Balilla under Italian colours.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Balilla sunk in the Adriatic, NW of Lissa Island, 14.7.1916, by gunfire and torpedoes from the Austrian torpedo-boats 65 F and 66 F.
