Project history: NUPA = Nuove Unita per il Pattugliamento d'Altura (New High Seas Patrol Ships). A further, simplified version of the NUMC design, intended for fisheries and antismuggling patrol. Ordered in 2000. Plans for a third were canceled. The ships were built with funds from the Transport and Navigation Ministry. The hull and superstructure are shaped to reduce radar reflection. The boat pockets recessed into the superstructure amidships are covered by Faraday-shield mesh to eliminate radar returns, and exhaust cooling is fitted. Have a composite materials superstructure. Fin stabilizers and Flume-type passive-tank stabilization are fitted. The hull lacks the bulbous bow form given to the NUMC ships. Equipped with twin 300t/hr firefighting water monitors and a 25-t/hr oil-spill recovery pumping system. Equipped only for patrol and policing duties, with no significant air defense and no ASW capabilities; IFF and NATO Link equipment, however, can be fitted. There is provision to mount a 76mm gun forward, but it is not fitted.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
