Project history: For the first time in postwar Italian practice, these ships were given a forecastle. They also had a transom stern, a departure from previous practice. As in the somewhat later Alpinos, they had a VDS, in their case a separate SQS-36 handled by a crane mounted on deck. There was also a medium-frequency hull sonar, reportedly a separate SQS-36. The 76mm gun was the successful OTO-Melara type, controlled by an OG 3 director (Orion RTN-7X radar), with an optical director (probably OG 1) aft. The single-barrel Menon mortar was mounted aft, in 'X' position.
