Project history: Most successful and numerous class of Italian destroyers. First 12 ships were ordered in 1936 as repetition of Oriani. Already during building design received a number of changes, in particular, 120mm guns of new model, and also little changed machinery which at invariable power became more efficient and reliable. Except new main guns, 120mm/15 star shells howitzer was installed and number of 13.2mm MGs was increased to 12. The overload after all innovations has made about 200t (from 1620 to 1830t), but, despite it, "Soldati" type destroyers in real conditions have appeared the fastest Italian destroyers: their speed reached 34-35kts.
Repeated order for 7 ships has followed in 1940. All changes brought in the design of 1st "Soldati" group, were spread also to the 2nd group ships, besides after occurrence of single 120mm/50 mount it was attached on new destroyers instead of star-shell howitzer (except Velite).
Five ships (from 7) of 2nd group were commissioned till September, 1943, Squadrista and Carrista remained incomplete, and works on the latter were suspended even earlier. Incomplete hull was used as a source of spare parts for repair of damaged sister-ships: the bow has got by Carabiniere, and stern by Velite. Survived Carabiniere and Granatiere were rebuilt as fast ASW escorts in 1952-1953 and re-rated as frigates in April, 1957.ce 1960.

Naval service: Artigliere 12.10.1940 was sunk by British cruisers York and Ajax off Malta. Lanciere 23.5.1942 foundered during a storm in Ionian sea. Aviere 17.12.1942 was sunk by two torpedoes from British submarine Splendid near Bizerte. Bersagliere 7.1.1943 was sunk by American aircraft at Palermo. Corsaro 9.1.1943 was lost on two mines laid by British minelayer Abdiel near Bizerte. Bombardiere 17.1.1943 was sunk by British submarine United at western coast of Sicily. Geniere 1.3.1943 was destroyed by American aircraft in dock at Palermo. Ascari 24.3.1943 was sunk on three mines laid by British minelayer Abdiel at coast of Tunisia. Alpino 19.4.1943 was sunk by British aircraft at La Spezia, salvaged, but never commissioned again. She was scuttled by Germans 24.4.1945 at Genoa. Camicia Nera 30.7.1943 was renamed Artigliere. Corazziere 9.9.1943 was scuttled by crew at Genoa, salvaged by Germans, but never repaired. She was sunk 4.9.1944 by Allied aircraft at Genoa. Squadrista in July, 1943 was renamed Corsaro, captured incomplete at Leghorn by German troops in September, 1943, renamed TA33. She was sunk at Genoa by Allied aircraft 4.3.1944. Carrista was captured incomplete by German troops in September, 1943, renamed TA34 and broken up on a slipway.
Carabiniere was used as weapon trial ship since 1960.
