Project history: Odero design. Development of Sella class with increased dimensions, triple TTs and 120mm guns in twin mounts. They had bridge and a conning tower of larger size. Damage tolerance of machinery was raised at the expense of re-planning of boiler rooms: now each boiler was placed in own separate compartment. Design standard displacement was 1040t, and actual displacement was over than 1200t. On trials all destroyers exceeded contract speed, but at full load made hardly more than 31kts. It has besides, appeared, that hull longitudinal strength is insufficient and it was necessary to stiffen it.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: Cesare Battisti was damaged by British aircraft 3.4.1941 at Arabian coast (Red sea), ran ashore and was demolished by crew. Nazario Sauro and Daniele Manin were sunk 3.4.1941 by British aircraft in Red sea. Francesco Nullo was torpedoed 20.10.1940 by British destroyer Kimberly in Red sea, ran aground and next day destroyed by British aircraft.
