Project history: Repetition of the previous Maestrale class, but with more powerful machinery. Raise of "official" speed has appeared insignificant though real speed has increased to 33kts. Besides more powerful machinery, on these ships out-of-date 40mm/39 Vickers MGs at last have disappeared from specification. Instead of them the number of 13.2mm MGs was increased twice.
Modernizations: 1939 - 1940, all: - 4 x 2 - 13.2/76; + 8 x 1 - 20/65 Breda 1939/1940
1941 - 1942, Vincenzo Gioberti, Alfredo Oriani: - 1 x 3 - 533 TT; + 1 x 1 - 120/15 OTO 1933/1934, 2 x 1 - 37/54 Breda 1939, 2 x 2 - 20/70 Scotti-Isotta Fraschini 1939, 2 DCT, S-Gerät sonar
1943, Alfredo Oriani: + FuMO 21 radar
Naval service: Two ships were lost 28.3.1941 in battle at Matapan: Vittorio Alfieri was sunk by gunfire of British destroyers Greyhound, Havock and Stuart, and Giosue Carducci by gunfire of British destroyers Jervis, Nubian and Hotspur. Vincenzo Gioberti 9.8.1943 was sunk by British submarine Simoom off La Spezia.
