Project history: These two ships were ordered in February 1950, and were the first postwar Italian destroyers. The hull design was based on that of the wartime 'Commandante' class. The powerplant was probably that of the US Gearing class. Armament and sensors broadly matched those of contemporary US ASW destroyers, except that the ASW weapon was the Italian mortar. A major reconstruction proposed in the late 1960s would have rearmed them with a single lightweight 127mm/54 forward and Tartar aft.

Modernizations: late 1960s, both: - 2 - 533 TT, SQS-11 sonar; + 2 x 3 - 324 TT, SQS-4 sonar

late 1970s, Impetuoso: + WLR-1, SLQ-A ECM suites

Naval service: No significant events.
