Project history: Built as the British SS Manila (4134grt, net 26360), in 1898 renamed Salacia. She kept her name in 1911, becoming German. In 1913 she became the Italian merchant ship Quarto. Bought by the Italian Navy on 6 February 1915 and converted to a seaplane transport, commissioned on 6 October and renamed Europa. Her capacity was 8 seaplanes, but usually carried 2 reconnaissance and 2 fighters. Fitted also as a depot ship for submarines.
